Premier Pitch (Futsal)

NATIONAL WOMEN’S HOCKEY LEAGUE (DIVISION 2)
Match Day 1: Khalsa vs Eagles*
Final Score: 0-0
Date: 24 February 2019, Sunday
Time: 4.30PM

Khalsa’s NWL2 Team kicked started their season on 24 Feb 2019 against Eagles. The women’s team this year is now coached by Mr Manminder Singh and managed by Ms Harpreet Kaur. Since undergoing this change and addition of new players, the girls have trained hard in the pre-season month’s leading up to the tournament. New and improved, the girls went in strong and confident.

Right off the bat, from the first quarter, the girls found themselves in attack. However nerves and jitters led to the lack of connecting passes between players. As such, the team was unable to create clear chances. There were few circle penetrations and no shots on target.

That being said, the girls did not give up. Washing off the first quarter and rid of the air of nervousness, they went into the second quarter with grit and determination. The team forced Eagles into hitting the ball but many a times, the Khalsa ladies picked up the ball in the opponent’s half. The balls were passed smoothly between the midfielders and attackers. Eagles, however, stood their ground and were able to clear all balls even with our ladies team having numerous shots on target this time but ultimately were still unable to find the backboard.

Moving into the third quarter, most of the eagles players sat in defence with one missed chance at the goal as the Khalsa goalkeeper cleared the ball out superbly and our defenders fought hard to build up the attack. Again, Khalsa continued to dominate in terms of possession of the ball and this time, even managed to get a shot corner. The speed of the game increased and Khalsa was able to keep the game in the 50 yard attacking line but unfortunately were not able to get the goal.

The final quarter saw the Khalsa ladies holding on to most of the possession trying to find their way through the sea of eagles players parked in defence. The girls were looking for the goal to make the match theirs. However, the girls made one too many passes and touches. As such, despite the efforts in the attacking zone, Khalsa was unable to finish it off with a win and only ended up with a single point.

It is evident from the match that Khalsa players have improved from last year. However, the girls will work on their teamwork and chemistry in the upcoming weekly trainings. The players aim to make every pass purposeful and the ultimate intention is to start scoring and converting the team efforts of attacks into goals. We hope to see this in the matches to come, starting with the one against Oldham next week.
